“You gotta help me out here,” Richard said as he leaned against Billie’s desk.

Billie looked up. “Are you kidding me? Richard, I’m already behind on this memo. I have to draft it for—”

“Not with work,” Richard said. “Ever since you came in this morning, you haven’t said a word to me or anyone else. What did I say?”

Billie was about to tell him about the fight she and Erica had gotten into yesterday at the bridal shop. The last thing she needed was for this firm to think she was some kind of ghetto hood rat that got into street fights on the weekend.

“Bad weekend is all,” she said. “And I’m very busy.”

“If you’re overwhelmed, I can understand if you don’t want to help me with my pro bono case. I can see—”

“No!” Billie said forcefully. “The little work I’m doing on that case has been the only saving grace in my entire life right now. I will make time for that. Please don’t push me off.”

“I wasn’t,” Richard said. “Just thought if you were overwhelmed I could—”

“What in the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Billie was shocked at the actual sight of Porter storming into her office like he owned it, but she wasn’t so surprised that he was actually there. She just didn’t think she had the stomach to deal with his anger right now and this was not the place.

“Hey!” Richard stood up, blocking Porter as he made his way to Billie’s desk.

“Get out of my way, Richard.” Porter pushed Richard aside. “This is between me and my . . . Billie.”

“What are you doing here?” she asked, coming around the desk.

“More important,” Richard said, “how did you get in here?”

“None of your damn business.” Porter focused all his angry energy at his ex-wife. “I warned you, Billie.”

“Callie let him in,” Billie said. “This firm is like Fort Knox. No one is getting in without someone inside letting them in.”

“Get your boyfriend out of here,” Porter warned. “I don’t think you want him to hear what I’m about to say.”

“That’s it,” Richard said, going to his desk. “I’m calling Security.”

“No,” Billie called after him. “Richard, just . . . can you just give me a second?”

“Are you kidding? No way.”

“How sweet.” Porter smiled condescendingly as he looked from Richard to Billie. “Trying to play the gentleman is fun, isn’t it? But I don’t think you want any of this, Richard.”

“Richard.” Billie rushed over to Richard’s desk to grab the phone out of his hand. “Please, I can handle this. Just go and don’t tell anyone, okay?”

Richard looked at her, disgusted by her choice and seeming unwavering in his refusal to leave.

“Trust me,” she added.

“Five minutes.” After a reluctant sigh, he gave Porter another threatening glare before leaving the office.

Billie closed the office door behind him and turned to Porter. “You’re sleeping with her, aren’t you?”

“Why did you tell Claire about us?”

“Claire, me, and Callie.” Billie walked grandly by him with a casual attitude. “You’re a busy, busy boy.
